Key Facts

Central Star
A star system is built around one or more stars.
Planetary Companions
Planets, moons, asteroids, and comets orbit the central star(s).
Gravity's Grip
Gravity from the star holds the system together.
Countless Systems
Scientists have discovered thousands of star systems beyond our own.

Meet the Star Family!

A star system is like a big family in space, with a star right in the middle, like a parent! Around this star, planets, moons, and even tiny bits of rock and ice zoom around. Our own Sun is a star, and it has a whole family of planets, including our Earth! These families can be very different, with some stars having lots of planets and others having just a few.

How Do They Stick Together?

Stars are super, super big and heavy, which means they have a strong pull called gravity. This gravity is like an invisible rope that keeps all the planets and other things from floating away into deep space. The closer something is to the star, the stronger the pull! It's like when you spin a ball on a string – the string keeps the ball from flying off.

Did You Know? WOW Facts!

Some star systems have more than one star! These are called binary or multiple star systems. Imagine two suns in the sky! Also, scientists have found thousands of star systems outside our own, and they think there are billions more out there. Some planets in other star systems might even be like Earth, with water and a chance for life!

Why Are Star Systems So Cool?

Star systems are important because they are where planets like ours are born. Studying them helps us understand how our own solar system, with our Sun and Earth, came to be. It also helps us search for other planets that might be able to support life, which is a super exciting adventure for scientists!
