Who Was Stand Watie?

Imagine a brave leader named Stand Watie! He was a Cherokee man who became a general. He was super important during a big fight called the American Civil War. He led soldiers who were mostly Cherokee, Muscogee, and Seminole people. He was the very last general from the Confederate side to give up. That means he was a determined leader!

A Tough Decision

Long ago, the Cherokee people had to move to new lands. Stand Watie and his brother signed a treaty, which was like an agreement. But many Cherokee people didn't like this agreement, and it caused a lot of trouble. Sadly, Stand Watie's family faced danger because of this. He had to be very strong and brave to protect himself and his people.

Leading in War

During the Civil War, Stand Watie chose to fight for the Confederate side. He commanded a special group of soldiers, mostly from his own people. They fought bravely in battles. Even though the war was difficult, Stand Watie kept leading his soldiers until the very end. He was known for his courage and his commitment to his soldiers.

After the Fighting

When the war was over, Stand Watie traveled to Washington, D.C. He wanted to talk to the leaders there and help his Cherokee people. He tried to make peace and heal the divisions within his nation. Even though it was hard, he kept working for his people. He then spent his last years trying to rebuild his farm.
