TBT: St. Francis Dam Flood

Key Facts
Meet the Giant Water Holder!
The St. Francis Dam was like a super-duper big bathtub for water! It was built a long, long time ago, between 1924 and 1926. This giant wall was made of concrete and was supposed to hold back a huge amount of water for the city of Los Angeles. Think of it like a giant playground slide, but instead of kids, it was meant to hold water that would travel to homes and schools.
Where Did All That Water Come From?
Los Angeles was growing, and people needed lots of water for drinking, washing, and playing. The St. Francis Dam was built to be a big helper! It was part of a giant system called the Los Angeles Aqueduct, which was like a super long straw bringing water from faraway mountains. The dam created a giant lake, so there was always plenty of water ready when the city needed it.
Uh Oh! A Big Problem!
Even though the dam was super strong, something went wrong. Just two years after it was finished, in 1928, the dam broke! It was like a giant dam bursting, and a huge wave of water rushed down the canyon. Sadly, many people lost their homes and lives because of this terrible accident. It was one of the biggest water disasters in California's history.
What We Learned from the Dam
After the dam broke, people learned a very important lesson. They realized that building something so big and important needed to be done with extreme care. Engineers learned to check the ground very, very carefully before building and to make sure the designs were perfect. This sad event helped make sure that future water projects would be much safer for everyone.
