Meet the Speedy White Ship!

The SS Antilles was a big, beautiful ship that looked like a floating hotel! It was built a long, long time ago, in 1953. It was almost exactly the same as another ship called SS Flandre, but the Antilles was painted all white, making it look super shiny. It was made to sail to warm places called the West Indies, where people go on fun cruises. Think of it as a giant, fancy bus for the ocean!

A Short, Exciting Trip!

Even though the SS Antilles was a grand ship, its adventures were shorter than some other ships. In 1971, it was sailing near a pretty island called Mustique. But oh no! The ship accidentally bumped into some rocks hidden under the water. This made a hole in its fuel tank, and the ship caught fire. Luckily, everyone on board got off safely and swam to the island!

A Splashy Ending

After the fire, the SS Antilles was too damaged to be moved. It stayed stuck on the rocks for months! Eventually, the big ship broke into two pieces. Later, parts of it were taken away, and the rest sank to the bottom of the ocean near the island. Now, it's a special place for fish to live, and sometimes, if the water is very low, you can even see its mast sticking out!

What Happened to the Ship?

The SS Antilles was a passenger ship, meaning it carried people on exciting journeys. It was designed to be comfortable and safe for travelers going to places like the West Indies for holidays. Even though its story ended with a shipwreck, it reminds us that even big, strong things can have unexpected adventures. The wreck is now part of the ocean floor, a home for sea creatures.
