Squatting in the Netherlands
Key Facts
Where is the Netherlands?
The Netherlands is a country in Europe, a big continent far away! It's mostly flat, like a giant pancake, and has lots of water. Think of it like a big playground with canals instead of slides. The main city, where lots of things happen, is called Amsterdam. It's a busy place with many houses and buildings, some of which have been empty for a while.
When Did This Start?
A long, long time ago, back in the 1960s, people in the Netherlands started a movement called 'kraken'. This is the Dutch word for squatting. They found empty buildings that nobody was using and decided to make them into homes or special places for everyone to enjoy. It was like finding a forgotten toy and making it new again!
Cool Places People Made!
Some of these empty buildings turned into amazing places! There's a place called ACU that's like a community center, and others became homes for groups of people. Some even turned old forts or villages into cool spots. It shows that even old, empty places can become special with a little imagination and effort from people.
What Happened Later?
Later on, the rules changed. In 2010, it became against the law to squat in empty buildings. This meant that people who were squatting had to leave. Even though it's not allowed anymore, some groups still find ways to use empty spaces. It's a story about people wanting to use buildings that would otherwise be empty.
