Welcome to the Land of Ice and Mountains!

Spitsbergen is a HUGE island way up north in the Arctic Ocean. It's the biggest island in Norway, which is a country far away! It's covered in tall mountains and sparkly glaciers, like giant ice slides. Sometimes, more than half of the island is covered in ice! It's so big, it's the 36th largest island in the whole world. That's like having a playground bigger than many countries!

Who Lives Here (Besides You!)?

Spitsbergen is home to amazing animals! You might see fluffy white polar bears looking for seals, sneaky arctic foxes with their bushy tails, and chunky reindeer munching on plants. Lots of birds also come here to have babies. The island is like a special hotel for these animals. But it's also home to people! The main town is called Longyearbyen, and it's where most people live and work.

A Long, Long Time Ago...

People didn't always live on Spitsbergen. A long, long time ago, sailors used it as a place to hunt whales. Then, for a while, nobody lived there. But later, people discovered coal under the ground, which is like black rock that can be burned for energy. So, they started digging mines and built towns for the miners. Now, it's a place for scientists and tourists too!

Getting Around the Icy World!

On Spitsbergen, there aren't many roads like you have at home. Instead, people use snowmobiles when it's snowy, and boats when the water isn't frozen. They also have planes to fly between places. It's a very different way to travel! The island is protected by special parks to keep the animals and nature safe.
