Key Facts
Meet the Mars Explorer!
Imagine a super-tough robot car, about the size of a golf cart, that can drive on another planet! That was Spirit! It landed on Mars in 2004, ready to explore.
Spirit was one of two rovers, like twin siblings, sent to Mars. Its twin, Opportunity, landed on the other side of the planet. Spirit's name was chosen by kids like you in a special contest.
It was built to be a super explorer, sending back amazing discoveries from the Red Planet.
Spirit's Super Long Adventure
Spirit was supposed to explore for only about 90 days, which is like a little over three months. But guess what? It kept going and going!
Thanks to some help from the sun and its solar panels, Spirit worked for over six Earth years! It drove way, way farther than anyone expected, covering almost 5 miles. That's like running around your school playground almost 200 times!
It was a true super-survivor on Mars.
Uh Oh, Stuck in the Martian Sand!
Even super-robots can have tricky moments. In 2009, Spirit got its wheels stuck in some soft sand, like getting stuck in a sandbox. It tried and tried to get free, and scientists on Earth worked hard to help it.
Even though it couldn't move anymore, Spirit kept exploring from where it was stuck. It became a stationary science station, still sending back important information until its battery finally ran out in 2010.
Why Spirit is So Cool!
Spirit showed us that robots can be amazing explorers, even on faraway planets. It taught scientists so much about Mars, like what the rocks are made of and what the ground is like. Even though Spirit stopped working, the information it sent back helps us understand Mars better. It inspires us to keep exploring space and dreaming big about discovering new worlds.
