Welcome to Spider Land!

Imagine a place far away, down in the ocean, called New Zealand. This is a special home for lots and lots of spiders! There are so many, scientists have found over 1,100 kinds, and there might be even more hiding! Most of these spiders can only be found here, like secret treasures. Some spiders came on boats with people, or floated on the wind like tiny balloons to get here.

Meet the Giant Spider!

Have you ever seen a spider with legs as wide as your hand? The biggest spider in New Zealand is called the Nelson cave spider. Its legs can stretch out as wide as a grown-up's hand, which is about 13 centimetres! Its body is about the size of a big grape. This giant spider likes to live in dark, cool caves, waiting for its dinner to walk by.

Spiders That Are Super Safe!

Most spiders in New Zealand are not scary at all! They are very shy and just want to catch tiny bugs. There is a spider called the flat huntsman spider, which is as big as your palm. It came from Australia a long time ago, maybe on a boat carrying wood. This spider is so friendly, it has even been in movies!

The Tricky Katipō

There is one spider in New Zealand that can give a yucky bite, and it's called the katipō. It's a bit like a black widow spider, but much less dangerous. Its bite can make someone feel sick, but no one has died from a katipō bite for over 200 years! It's important to be careful, but most spiders are more scared of you than you are of them.
