Spermophilus: The Super Sleepy Squirrels!

Imagine tiny squirrels that don't climb trees but dig cozy homes underground! These are Spermophilus, also called ground squirrels or susliks. They live in a big area called Eurasia, which is a super continent made up of Europe and Asia.

They love wide-open grassy places, like big fields or even grassy parts of airports! They are busy little critters, always looking for tasty seeds and plants to eat.

Spermophilus have a special trick: they love to sleep for a very, very long time! When it gets cold, they snuggle deep in their burrows and hibernate, which is like a super long nap. In hot, dry places, they might even take a nap during the hottest part of the year, called aestivation. This helps them save energy when food is hard to find. It's like they're practicing for the longest nap ever!

What do these busy burrowers eat? Mostly plants! They love munching on seeds, yummy grasses, and other leafy greens. They also dig up tasty roots and tubers from underground. Sometimes, they might even snack on little bugs if they find them. They use their sharp little teeth to nibble and chew their way through their meals, gathering food to store for their long sleepy times.

Spermophilus are found across a huge part of the world called Eurasia. Think of places like Eastern Europe and all the way to a region called Manchuria in Asia. They prefer wide-open spaces where they can see danger coming from far away.

They dig their homes in the ground, creating little underground towns where they live together. It’s a big world out there for these little ground-dwelling friends!
