Key Facts
Meet the Ocean's Biggest Toothed Friend!
Imagine a creature bigger than a school bus, with a giant, square head! That's the sperm whale! They are the largest toothed animals in the whole ocean.
Their scientific name is Physeter macrocephalus, which means 'bladder head' because of their big, wrinkly heads. These amazing whales live in oceans all around the world, from cold waters to warm tropical seas. They love to dive super deep to find their favorite snacks!
What's for Dinner? Squids Galore!
Sperm whales are carnivores, which means they only eat meat. Their most favorite food is giant squid! They also munch on fish and other squid they find in the deep, dark ocean. To catch their dinner, they can hold their breath for a really long time, sometimes over an hour, and dive down more than a mile deep! That's deeper than many tall buildings are high!
Super Swimmers with Super Senses
These whales are incredible divers. They use something called echolocation, like a built-in sonar, to find their food in the dark. They make clicking sounds, and when the sound bounces off something, they can tell where it is. Sperm whales can grow to be as long as 60 feet, which is about the length of two school buses parked end-to-end! They weigh as much as 20 elephants!
Living in Big Whale Families
Female sperm whales and their babies live together in groups called pods. The grown-up females take care of all the babies in the pod, like a big, ocean daycare! Baby sperm whales are called calves, and they drink milk from their moms. Sadly, sperm whales are in danger because of things like pollution and getting caught in fishing nets. We need to protect these gentle giants of the sea.
