Who's That Bear?

Imagine a bear that looks like it's wearing glasses! That's the Spectacled Bear, also called the Andean Bear. It's the only kind of bear that lives in South America, all the way up in the tall Andes Mountains.

These bears are special because they don't eat much meat. They mostly munch on plants, fruits, and yummy roots. Their fur is usually black, but they have cool light-colored markings around their eyes that look just like spectacles, or glasses!

A Bear's Big Home

Spectacled Bears live high up in the mountains of South America, in places like Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia. These mountains are covered in thick forests, and the bears love to climb trees! They can be found in cloud forests, which are misty and damp, or in dry forests. They build cozy nests in trees to sleep in. It's like having a treehouse home, but for a bear!

Yummy Bear Snacks!

What do Spectacled Bears love to eat? Mostly plants! They are like super-duper vegetarian bears. They gobble up fruits, berries, cactus, and even tree bark. Sometimes they might eat a bug or a tiny animal, but their favorite meals are all green and growing. They use their strong paws to dig for roots and their long tongues to slurp up tasty treats. It's a very healthy diet!

Spectacled Bears Need Our Help!

Sadly, Spectacled Bears are in trouble. Their forest homes are disappearing because people are building farms and towns. This makes it hard for them to find food and places to live. Scientists call them 'Vulnerable,' which means they need protection. We can help by learning about them and protecting their forest homes so these amazing bears can keep living in the Andes Mountains.
