Who Landed on Honduras Shores?

Long, long ago, before cars or even bicycles, brave explorers sailed across a giant ocean! In 1502, Christopher Columbus arrived and said this land, now called Honduras, belonged to Spain. But people already lived there!

They were called indigenous peoples, like the Maya and Lenca. They had their own leaders, like the brave Maya chief Sicumba and the Lenca leader Lempira, who were super strong and didn't want to give up their homes.

The First Spanish Footprints!

In 1524, a Spanish explorer named Gil González Dávila was the very first to try and take over Honduras. He built a special port on the coast called Puerto de Caballos, which was like a busy train station for more Spanish ships. But it wasn't easy!

Different groups of Spanish people from places like Mexico and Panama kept trying to claim parts of Honduras, and they even fought each other. It was a bit like a messy game of tag where everyone wanted to be 'it'!

Brave Leaders Stand Tall!

When the Spanish started to take over, some amazing leaders fought back! Lempira, a Lenca leader, was like a superhero of the mountains. He gathered his people and held out for six whole months at a strong castle on a big rock called Peñol de Cerquín.

He was so brave that his fight made the Spanish really worried. Even though he was eventually defeated, his courage inspired many and showed how much his people loved their land.

A New Land, A New Way

After many years of fighting and changes, the Spanish finally took control of most of Honduras by 1539. They built new towns like San Pedro Sula and Gracias a Dios. This meant that Honduras became part of the big Spanish Empire. Life changed a lot for the people who lived there, and the Spanish brought their language and customs. It was the beginning of a whole new chapter for Honduras!
