Fun Fact
Discovery spent nearly a whole year in space over its career!

Meet the Starship Explorer!

Imagine a giant airplane that can fly all the way to space! That was the Space Shuttle Discovery. It was one of the first super-cool spaceships NASA built.

Discovery was like a truck for space, carrying astronauts and important stuff to the International Space Station. It was also strong enough to lift big telescopes, like the Hubble, way up high where they could see the stars better. It was a real hero of space travel!

How Discovery Took Flight!

Getting Discovery into space was a huge team effort! It had three main parts: the shuttle itself, a giant fuel tank, and two big rocket boosters that looked like fireworks. When it was time to launch, those boosters fired up with a HUGE roar and pushed Discovery off the ground.

Once in space, the shuttle could fly around like an airplane. To come back, it would glide down and land on a runway, just like a regular plane, but super fast!

Discovery's Awesome Jobs!

Discovery did so many important things! It flew more missions than any other spaceship, which is like going to school for 27 years and always being the best student! It helped build the International Space Station, a giant home for astronauts in space.

It also carried the famous Hubble Space Telescope into orbit, letting us see amazing pictures of faraway galaxies. Discovery showed us what humans could do in space!

Where Discovery Lives Now!

After all its amazing adventures, Discovery retired from space missions. But it didn't just disappear! Now, you can visit Discovery at a special museum called the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. It's part of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. It's like visiting a giant, retired superhero! You can stand next to it and imagine all the incredible journeys it took among the stars.
