Meet the Giant Space Bus!

Imagine a super-duper big bus, but instead of driving on roads, it flies to space! That's kind of like the Space Shuttle Atlantis. It was a special airplane that could zoom all the way up to the stars.

Atlantis was built by a company called Rockwell International and arrived at NASA's launch site in Florida in 1985. It was the fourth shuttle to be ready for action and one of the last ones ever made. Get ready for some amazing adventures!

How Atlantis Took Flight!

Atlantis didn't just float into space. It had powerful engines that burned fuel to push it up, up, up! Once it was high enough, it would glide through space like a bird. To come back home, it would land like a regular airplane, but on a very long runway. It was like a super-fast, super-tall glider. This amazing shuttle helped scientists do important work way above our heads.

Atlantis's Awesome Trips!

Atlantis went on 33 exciting missions, which means it flew to space 33 times! Its very first trip was in 1985, and its last trip was in 2011. Can you believe it orbited the Earth almost 5,000 times? That's like going around our planet more times than you can count on your fingers and toes! It traveled so far, it could have gone to the Moon and back more than 500 times!

A Starry Name and a New Home

This amazing spaceship is named after a boat called RV Atlantis. That boat was used a long, long time ago to explore the ocean! Now, the Space Shuttle Atlantis isn't flying to space anymore. It's retired and lives at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida. You can go and see it up close and imagine all the incredible journeys it took among the stars.
