Key Facts
Where Did They Sail?
The South Sea Company was all about Great Britain, a country with lots of islands and a big navy. They wanted to trade with places far away, across the 'South Seas' and parts of America. Back then, Spain and Portugal were in charge of many of those lands, so it was tricky for the British to trade there. The company's main office was in London, a super busy city where lots of business happens.
A Big Idea to Pay Off Debt!
Imagine your grown-ups had to pay back a lot of money. The South Sea Company had a clever idea to help the government pay off its debts. They promised to take on the government's money problems. In return, they got special permission to trade. This was like a big deal between the company and the country!
Trading Slaves and Dreams
One of the main jobs the company was allowed to do was trade enslaved people from Africa to South America. This was a very sad and unfair part of history. The company also told everyone they would make tons of money from trading in South America. People got so excited about these promises that they bought lots of company 'shares' or pieces of the company.
The Bubble That Popped!
Everyone thought the company would be super rich, so the price of its shares went up, up, up! It was like a giant bubble getting bigger and bigger. But the company wasn't actually making much money from trading. Suddenly, people realized the bubble was too big and it popped! Lots of people lost their money, and it was a big problem for Britain.
