Key Facts
Who Was Sojourner Truth?
Imagine a super strong voice that could make people listen! That was Sojourner Truth. She was born into slavery a long, long time ago, around 1797. That's even before your grandparents' grandparents were born! She didn't have an easy life, but she was incredibly brave and wanted everyone to be treated fairly. She decided to travel and share her powerful message with anyone who would listen.
Her Amazing Journey!
When Sojourner Truth was a grown-up, she decided to walk away from slavery and find her freedom. She changed her name to Sojourner Truth because she wanted to 'sojourn,' or travel, and tell people the 'truth' about how unfair slavery was. She walked all over the country, sometimes with no shoes, telling people that all people, no matter their skin color, deserved to be free and treated with kindness.
Speaking Up for Everyone!
Sojourner Truth was a powerful speaker! She gave speeches that made people think. One of her most famous speeches asked, 'Ain't I a Woman?' She pointed out that even though she was a woman and had worked just as hard as men, she wasn't always treated with the same respect. She fought for the freedom of enslaved people and also for women to have the same rights as men.
Why We Remember Her!
Sojourner Truth is remembered because she never gave up on her dream of a fair world. She showed everyone that one person's voice can make a big difference. Even though life was hard for her, she used her strength to help others. Her words and actions helped change the way people thought about freedom and equality, and that's super important!
