Key Facts
Romania's Big Change!
Once upon a time, Romania was a country called the Socialist Republic of Romania. It was like a big club where one main party, the Communist Party, made most of the decisions. This lasted for a long, long time, from 1947 all the way to 1989.
Before that, it was called the Romanian People's Republic. It was part of a group of countries called the Eastern Bloc, which were friends with the Soviet Union.
A New Government Arrives!
After a big war, soldiers from the Soviet Union came to Romania. Soon, a new government was formed that was friendly to the Soviet Union. They made new rules, and the old leaders were asked to leave. In 1947, the king had to say goodbye, and Romania became a republic with a new name. It was a big shift for the country and its people.
Making Things Better (and Not So Better)
At first, Romania had to share its treasures with the Soviet Union, which made things tough. But later, Romania started to do its own thing and even asked the Soviet soldiers to leave! For a while, life got better for many people. More babies survived, people lived longer, and more people learned to read and write. But then, things started to slow down.
A Leader and a Big Fall
A leader named Nicolae Ceaușescu became very powerful. He was liked at first because he stood up to the Soviet Union. But later, he made strict rules and people had to live with less. This made many people unhappy, and in 1989, there was a big change, and his government ended. It was a dramatic end to a long period in Romania's story.
