Who's That Fluffy White Bird?

Imagine a big, beautiful owl that's mostly white, like fresh snow! That's the snowy owl. It's one of the biggest owls around, and it's special because most other owls aren't white. Boy snowy owls are super white, while girl snowy owls have cute brown speckles. Baby snowy owls are dark at first and get whiter as they grow up. They live way up north in the Arctic, where it's very cold and snowy!

Hunting Like a Snowy Owl Pro!

Snowy owls are different from many other owls. While most owls sleep during the day and hunt at night, snowy owls love to be active when the sun is shining, especially in the summer! They are super good hunters.

Their favorite food is a little furry creature called a lemming. But if lemmings are hard to find, they can eat other small animals or even birds. They have amazing eyesight to spot their dinner from far away.

Cozy Nest in the Cold

Snowy owls build their nests on the ground, usually on a little hill. They lay lots of eggs, sometimes 5 to 11! The eggs hatch one by one, so the baby owls are different sizes. It takes a long time for the baby owls, called owlets, to grow big and strong enough to fly and find their own food. They usually learn to fly in the autumn, just before it gets super cold.

Where Do They Wander?

Snowy owls are like travelers! They don't always stay in the same place. They might move around to find food or a good place to raise their babies. Sometimes, they travel surprisingly far south, even to places where it doesn't snow much! Scientists are worried because there are fewer snowy owls now, and they want to help protect these amazing white hunters of the Arctic.
