Cuba's Story: A Tale of Two Peoples

Long, long ago, the first people in Cuba were called the Taíno and Guanahatabey. They lived peacefully on the island. Then, people from Spain arrived. They brought new diseases that made many Taíno very sick. The Spanish also forced them to work, which was very hard. Sadly, most of the original people were gone. This is a sad part of Cuba's story.

Ships Full of People

Because the first people couldn't do all the work needed for growing sugar, the Spanish brought people from Africa to Cuba. Imagine over a million people arriving on ships, forced to leave their homes. They worked on huge sugar farms, called plantations.

Over time, more people of African descent lived in Cuba than people of European descent. Many Cubans today have ancestors who were brought over on those ships.

Sugar, Sugar Everywhere!

Cuba became super famous for growing sugar, like a giant candy factory! The sugar was so important that even when other countries said slavery was wrong, Cuba kept bringing people from Africa to work. They even brought workers from China to help. This went on for a very, very long time, until 1886. That's when slavery was finally stopped in Cuba.

A Long Road to Freedom

It took a very long time for everyone in Cuba to be free. The first people were enslaved by the Spanish. Then, people from Africa were brought over. Later, workers from China came. It wasn't until 1886 that the last enslaved people were set free. This long journey shows how important it is for everyone to be treated fairly and have their freedom.
