Key Facts
Whoosh! What is Ski Jumping?
Ski jumping is a super cool sport where brave athletes ski down a steep ramp, called an in-run, and then launch themselves into the air! They try to fly as far as they can and land safely. It's like a giant leap of faith! The goal is to get the longest jump possible. Judges also watch how well they fly and how smoothly they land. It's a test of courage and skill!
Ramps, Jumps, and Landing!
In ski jumping, athletes start at the top of a very tall hill. They speed down a slippery track and then jump off a special platform. The hills are HUGE!
Some are as tall as a 10-story building. When they jump, they stretch their arms and legs out to catch the air, like a bird's wings. They try to land on a sloped area called the landing hill.
It's important to land with your skis together and stay standing!
A Long, Long Time Ago!
Ski jumping has been part of the Winter Olympics since the very first one in 1924! Back then, there was only one size of hill. Over the years, they added different sized hills, like the 'normal hill' and the 'large hill'. In 1964, they even added both! Now, women also get to compete, which is super exciting. It's amazing how the sport has grown and changed!
Super Skis and Brave Jumpers!
Ski jumpers wear special long, wide skis that help them glide through the air. They also wear tight suits to help them fly faster. The athletes themselves are very strong and have to be brave to jump from such high places. They train for years to get good at it. Imagine jumping farther than a school bus! That's what some of these amazing athletes can do.
