What's a Sinkhole?

A sinkhole is like a giant, unexpected hole that forms in the ground. Sometimes it looks like a shallow dip, and other times it's a super deep pit! These holes can be found all over the world, in grassy fields, forests, and even under roads. They can be as wide as a playground and as deep as a tall building is high.

How Do They Appear?

Most sinkholes happen because of water! Imagine water slowly melting away sugar cubes. Underground, water can do something similar to certain types of rocks, like limestone. Over a very long time, the water makes tiny tunnels and holes. Eventually, the ground above these tunnels can't hold itself up anymore and collapses, creating a sinkhole.

Are They Dangerous?

Sinkholes can be surprising and sometimes a little scary. They can pop up suddenly, which means they can sometimes swallow up cars or even parts of buildings if they form underneath. That's why scientists study them to understand where they might form and to help keep people safe.

Cool Sinkhole Facts!

Did you know some sinkholes are so deep they reach underground lakes? These are called cenotes and were sometimes used by ancient people for water. Sinkholes can be round like bowls or have jagged edges like a broken cookie. They are a natural wonder of our amazing planet!
