Simpson Desert
Key Facts
Meet the Giant Red Sand Land!
Way, way down in the middle of Australia is a HUGE place called the Simpson Desert. It's like a giant sandy blanket covering parts of three states: Northern Territory, South Australia, and Queensland. This desert is so big, it's the fourth-largest desert in all of Australia!
It's mostly made of dry sand and has amazing, long hills called sand dunes. These dunes are like giant waves made of sand, stretching for miles and miles.
Sand Hills Taller Than You!
The sand dunes in the Simpson Desert are super special because they are the longest parallel sand dunes in the whole world! They mostly run from north to south. Some of these sand hills are small, only as tall as a few grown-ups stacked up.
But on the eastern side, they get much bigger! The tallest one, called Big Red, is as tall as a 10-story building! Plants help keep these giant sand hills from moving around too much.
A Secret Water Surprise!
Even though it's a desert and looks super dry, there's a secret water surprise underneath! Deep down, there's a giant underground lake called the Great Artesian Basin. Sometimes, water from this basin bubbles up to the surface in special spots called springs. It's like nature's own water fountain! This water is very important for the plants and animals that live in this tough, sandy place.
A Special Name for a Special Place
The people who have lived in this area for a very, very long time have a special name for the Simpson Desert. They call it Munga-Thirri! This shows that the desert has been a home and a special place for people for thousands of years. They know all its secrets, like where to find water and how to live happily in this amazing, sandy landscape.
