Meet the Mighty Ottomans!

In 1529, a super-big army from the Ottoman Empire, led by a powerful leader named Suleiman the Magnificent, marched towards the city of Vienna. They had more than 100,000 soldiers! That's like filling up a whole stadium with people, and then some!

Their goal was to capture Vienna, a very important city in Europe. But the people inside Vienna weren't going to give up easily. They had to get ready for a big fight!

Vienna's Brave Defenders!

Inside Vienna, there weren't nearly as many soldiers as the attackers. Only about 21,000 brave people stood ready to defend their homes. That's like only having enough kids for one or two classrooms trying to stop a whole school from being taken over!

Their leader, Niklas Graf Salm, was very smart and helped them prepare. They knew they had to be clever and strong to survive the big army outside their walls.

A Super Short, Super Scary Fight!

The big battle, called a siege, didn't last very long, only about two weeks! It was like a really intense game of tag that ended super fast. Even though the Ottoman army was huge, they couldn't break through Vienna's strong walls. The defenders fought with all their might, and the attackers eventually had to leave. Vienna was safe! It was a huge win for the people who lived there.

Why This Fight Was a Big Deal!

This battle was super important because it showed that the Ottoman Empire couldn't just take over any city they wanted in Europe. It was like a big 'No Trespassing' sign! It made other countries in Europe feel a bit safer. For the next 150 years, there were more fights between these two big powers, but this first try by the Ottomans to grab Vienna didn't work!
