What Was the Siege of Tobruk?

The Siege of Tobruk was like a big, long game of keep-away that happened a long, long time ago, in 1941. Brave soldiers were stuck inside a city called Tobruk, in a place called North Africa. Other soldiers wanted to take over the city, so they surrounded it and tried to get in. The soldiers inside were called the 'Rats of Tobruk' because they were so tough and wouldn't give up!

Who Were the 'Rats of Tobruk'?

The 'Rats of Tobruk' were the amazing soldiers who defended the city. Most of them were from Australia, and they were led by a brave general named Leslie Morshead. They were trapped for 231 days, which is more than half a year! That's longer than you've been in school this year! They had to be super clever and strong to survive all the attacks.

Why Did They Fight So Hard?

Tobruk was a really important city because it had a big port, like a special parking spot for ships. If the bad guys took Tobruk, they could use the port to bring in more soldiers and supplies easily. The 'Rats of Tobruk' knew this, so they fought with all their might to stop them. They were protecting their friends and their country!

How Did They Win?

Even though they were surrounded, the 'Rats of Tobruk' never gave up. Ships secretly sailed in at night to bring them food and water, and to take away the hurt soldiers. Other brave soldiers on the outside tried to help them break free. Finally, after many long months, a big army called the British Eighth Army arrived and helped the 'Rats of Tobruk' win the fight!
