The Big Castle Fight!

Once upon a time, there was a strong castle called Szigetvár in a land called Hungary. In 1566, a very, very big army from the Ottoman Empire wanted to march through Hungary to a city called Vienna. But the castle of Szigetvár stood right in their way!

It was like a giant roadblock. The soldiers inside the castle, led by a brave man named Nikola IV Zrinski, decided to fight back against the huge army. This big fight is called the Siege of Szigetvár.

Who Was Fighting?

On one side, you had the Ottoman army, led by their leader, Sultan Suleiman. This army was HUGE, like a whole city of soldiers! On the other side were the brave defenders of Szigetvár castle.

There were only about 2,300 of them, which is much smaller than the Ottoman army. Their leader was Nikola IV Zrinski, a very courageous man who promised to defend the castle with all his might. It was a battle of a small, determined group against a giant force.

A Super Long and Tough Battle!

This wasn't a quick fight! The siege lasted for 33 whole days, which is more than a month! Imagine waiting that long for something to happen.

The soldiers inside the castle fought incredibly hard, even when they were running out of food and supplies. The Ottoman army kept attacking, trying to break through the castle walls. It was a very difficult time for everyone involved.

Sadly, almost all the brave defenders lost their lives, and many soldiers from the Ottoman army also died.

Did They Win?

The Ottoman army did eventually take the castle, so they won the battle. But it was a very costly win! So many soldiers died on both sides that some people call it a 'Pyrrhic victory,' which means winning but at a terrible cost.

Even though the Ottomans won, they were so tired and had lost so many men that they couldn't march to Vienna that year. The brave fight at Szigetvár saved Vienna from being attacked for a very long time!
