Key Facts
Who Are the Seneca?
Imagine a group of people called the Seneca! Their special name in their own language means 'Great Hill People.' They used to live in a beautiful area south of a giant lake called Lake Ontario. They were a very important part of a bigger group called the Iroquois League, and because they lived way out west, they were known as the 'Keepers of the Western Door.' That means they helped guard the western side of their lands!
Where Did They Live?
The Seneca people lived in a place that is now called New York in the United States. Think of a big, wide land with lots of nature. They were one of the first groups in the Iroquois League, which was like a big family of nations. Today, many Seneca people still live in New York, but some also live in a place called Oklahoma and even in Canada. Their homes are often near rivers and forests.
Amazing Seneca Stories!
The Seneca have a long and exciting history. Long ago, they were super important because they were allies with the British. After a big fight called the American Revolution, many Seneca had to move. Some moved to Canada, and others were moved to different parts of the United States. Even though they moved, they kept their traditions and stories alive, passing them down through families.
Seneca Today!
Guess what? The Seneca people are still around today! More than 10,000 Seneca live in the United States. There are three main groups, or tribes, that are officially recognized. Two of these are in New York, close to a city called Buffalo. Another group lives all the way in Oklahoma. About 1,000 Seneca also live in Canada. They are proud of their heritage and continue to share their culture.
