Newly Elected Senator Frances Black

Key Facts
Where is the Senate's Clubhouse?
The Senate is like a special meeting room for grown-ups who help run France. It's located in a beautiful old building called the Luxembourg Palace, right in the heart of Paris, the capital city. This palace has a gorgeous garden called the Jardin du Luxembourg, which is like a big, beautiful park where anyone can go to play or relax.
So, while the senators are busy making decisions, people can enjoy the lovely garden nearby!
Who are the Senators?
The people who work in the Senate are called senators. There are 348 of them! They are not chosen by everyone voting directly, like in some elections.
Instead, other people who already have important jobs in towns and cities across France get to vote for them. It's like a special election for leaders. Senators have a big job, and they stay in their roles for six years, which is longer than you're in elementary school!
Making the Rules!
The Senate is part of the French Parliament, which is like the country's main team for making rules. It works with another group called the National Assembly. Sometimes, the Senate and the National Assembly might not agree on a new rule.
When this happens, the National Assembly usually gets the final say, but the Senate still has important jobs, like helping to change the country's main rulebook, called the Constitution. It's like having two teachers who have to agree on class rules!
A Very Old Idea
Having a Senate is an old idea that started in France a long, long time ago, even before your grandparents were born! It was first created during the French Revolution, a very exciting time in history. The idea was to have a group that could help guide the country and make sure things were done fairly.
Over the years, the Senate has become known as a 'guardian' of France's important rules and freedoms, making sure they are protected.
