A Big Game
It was part of a larger competition between the British and Russian empires called the 'Great Game'.

Why Were They Fighting Anyway?

Long ago, two big empires, the British and the Russians, were like rivals playing a super-secret game called the 'Great Game'. They both wanted to have more power and influence in a country called Afghanistan, which was like a special prize in the middle. The British, who ruled a big part of India, were worried the Russians might try to get too close.

So, they decided to send their soldiers into Afghanistan to make sure things stayed the way they wanted them to.

The Big Adventure Begins!

In 1878, British soldiers marched into Afghanistan. The leader of Afghanistan at the time, Sher Ali Khan, got scared and decided to go ask the Russians for help! He traveled a long way, but sadly, he got sick and passed away before he could reach them.

His son, Mohammad Yaqub Khan, took over and tried to make peace with the British by signing a treaty. But then, something very sad happened: a group of British people who were sent to live in Kabul were attacked and killed. This made the war start all over again!

New Leaders and Big Battles!

While all this was happening, a new leader named Abdur Rahman Khan started becoming very strong in another part of Afghanistan. He was a bit like a superhero who was good at fighting and making friends. The British saw him as someone they could work with.

Later, another leader, Ayub Khan, started a new fight and even beat the British in a big battle called Maiwand! But the British army came back strong and won the final fight near a city called Kandahar. In the end, Abdur Rahman Khan became the main leader of Afghanistan.

What Happened Next?

After all the fighting, Abdur Rahman Khan became the ruler of Afghanistan. He was recognized by the British, and he helped create a kind of 'buffer zone' between the British lands and the Russian lands. This meant Afghanistan was like a neutral playground between the two big rivals.

The British soldiers then packed up and went home. This war helped shape how countries in that part of the world interacted for a long time.
