Key Facts
Meet the Sleepy Giant!
Imagine a super tall mountain that's actually a volcano named San Miguel! It lives in a country called El Salvador, far, far away. This volcano is so big, it's like a giant sleeping in the land. It's surrounded by green places, and the weather can be warm and sunny. Sometimes, this giant mountain wakes up a little and lets out steam and ash, like a big sigh!
When the Giant Sneezed!
Even though San Miguel is usually quiet, it has surprised people before! In 2002, it let out a puff of steam, gas, and ash. It was like a little sneeze that lasted for 3 hours, but thankfully, no one got hurt.
Then, many years later, in 2013, it had a bigger surprise! It sent ash and smoke way up into the sky. This made people who lived nearby pack their bags and move to a safer spot for a little while.
What's Inside the Giant?
Volcanoes like San Miguel are like giant ice cream cones turned upside down, but made of rock and hot stuff! Deep inside, there's super hot, melted rock called magma. When the pressure builds up, this magma can push its way out through a hole at the top, which we call a crater.
Sometimes, it just lets out steam and gases, and other times, it erupts with ash and lava. It's a powerful force of nature!
Living Near the Giant
People live in towns and villages not too far from San Miguel. They have learned to live with the volcano, knowing it can sometimes be active. They plant crops in the rich soil that volcanoes leave behind, which is great for growing food.
When the volcano rumbles or shows signs of waking up, scientists watch it very carefully to keep everyone safe. It's important to listen to the grown-ups and scientists when a volcano is active!
