Welcome to Sakai!

Sakai is a super cool city in Japan, like a special neighborhood in a bigger place called Osaka. It's been around for a VERY long time, even before your grandparents were born! Think of it as a place that used to be a super busy harbor where ships from all over the world would stop.

It's so old that it has giant, special hills called kofun, which are like ancient tombs shaped like keyholes. One of these hills is the biggest grave in the whole world by how much space it takes up!

Super Sharp Secrets!

Long, long ago, Sakai was famous for making awesome swords, like the ones you see in movies! But now, they are famous for something else that's still super sharp: knives! They make some of the best knives in the world.

Imagine a chef’s knife that’s so good, it can slice a tomato super thin. That’s the kind of amazing quality they have in Sakai. It’s like they have a secret recipe for making things super sharp and super strong.

Ancient Keyhole Hills!

One of the most amazing things about Sakai are the kofun. These are huge mounds of earth, and they are shaped like a keyhole! They were built a super long time ago, around the year 400.

The biggest one, called Daisen Kofun, is so big it’s the largest grave on Earth by area. Imagine a playground, and then imagine a grave that is bigger than that whole playground! That’s how massive these ancient structures are.

A City with Lots of People!

Sakai is a really big city, with almost as many people as some of the biggest cities you might know! As of a recent count, there were over 800,000 people living there. That’s a lot of people! It’s the fourteenth biggest city in all of Japan. So, it’s not just old and famous for knives, it’s also a bustling place where lots of people live, work, and play.
