Welcome to Saint John!

Imagine a city right by the ocean where ships come and go! That's Saint John, a special place in Canada. It's like a big playground next to the water. This city is super old, even older than your grandparents' grandparents! It's a busy port, which means lots of boats and ships visit to pick up and drop off things. Think of it as a giant toy box where goods are traded from all over the world.

A City Built by the Sea

Saint John sits right on the edge of the Bay of Fundy, which has the biggest tides in the world! This means the water level goes up and down a LOT. The city was founded a long, long time ago, in 1785.

That's when people decided to build a real city here. It started with two towns that joined together, like two friends deciding to play together. It's a place where people have been building and working for centuries.

Ships, Jobs, and Fun!

Saint John is famous for its big port. It's the third-busiest port in all of Canada! Ships here carry all sorts of things, like oil and even cars. This means lots of people have jobs working at the port. The city also has museums, like the New Brunswick Museum, where you can see amazing things from the past. It's a place full of history and important work.

Exploring Saint John's Past

Long ago, explorers sailed to this spot. One explorer, Samuel de Champlain, landed here and named the river after Saint John. Indigenous peoples, like the Mi'kmaq and Wolastoqiyik, lived here even before that and called the river Wolastoq.

Later, people from France and England had big disagreements about who owned the land. Eventually, people who wanted to stay British after a war came and helped build the city we know today.
