Key Facts
What Was This Place Called?
Saint-Domingue was a special place, like a French playground, on a big island called Hispaniola. It was in the part of the island that is now a country called Haiti. For a long time, from when your grandparents were very young, until even before your parents were born, this French colony was a busy place. It was like a piece of France far, far away, in the warm Caribbean Sea.
How Did the French Get There?
The French started to settle on the western side of Hispaniola a long, long time ago. They were like explorers finding new lands. Eventually, a big agreement called the Treaty of Ryswick made it official that the French could have a part of the island, including a smaller island called Tortuga. It was like drawing a line on a map to say, 'This side is ours!'
A Big Change Happened!
Something amazing and important happened in Saint-Domingue. People who were enslaved, along with some others, got together for a secret meeting. They planned a huge change called the Haitian Revolution! This led to the end of slavery in the colony, which was a really big deal. It was like a giant wave of change washing over the land.
From Colony to Country!
After a lot of fighting and big changes, the French soldiers finally left Saint-Domingue. The people there decided they wanted to be free and make their own country. They named it Haiti, which was an old name for the island. So, this French colony turned into a brand-new, independent nation, all by itself!
