Rural flight

Have you ever seen a town with only a few houses and a small shop? Sometimes, more and more people start to leave these places. They move to big cities where there are lots of jobs and exciting things to do.

This is called rural flight, and it means the countryside is becoming less crowded. It's like when everyone in your class suddenly moves to a different school, and your old school starts to get empty.

People move for many reasons! Sometimes, jobs in farming or mining disappear because machines can do the work of many people. Other times, cities offer better schools for kids or more fun places to visit. Think of it like wanting to go to the biggest playground with the most slides. Cities have more of these 'pulls' that draw people away from the quieter countryside, like magnets pulling metal.

When fewer people live in a town, it can be hard to keep things open. Imagine if your favorite toy store closed because not enough kids were buying toys. The same happens in towns. Shops, doctors' offices, and even schools might close if there aren't enough people to support them. This makes it even harder for people to stay, creating a cycle where more people leave.

Sometimes, grown-ups try to help towns stay busy. They might build new roads, bring electricity to more homes, or even help people learn from far away using computers. Other times, governments might try to make it harder for people to leave. But often, they just try to manage where people move, helping big cities grow while the countryside changes.
