Key Facts
What's a Run in Cricket?
Imagine a game where you score points by running! In cricket, a 'run' is like a point. When two players, called batters, hit a ball and run to the other side of a long strip called the pitch, they score a run.
If they run back and forth super fast, they can score even more runs! The team that scores the most runs usually wins the game. It's all about how many times you can get those batters to run!
Super Fast Running and Big Hits!
Sometimes, batters don't even need to run to score! If a batter hits the ball really hard and it goes all the way to the edge of the field without bouncing, that's a 'six'! That's like scoring 6 runs at once!
If the ball bounces once before reaching the edge, it's a 'four'. These big hits are super exciting for everyone watching. The faster the batters run, or the further they hit the ball, the more runs their team gets!
The Cricket Pitch Adventure
The cricket pitch is a long, flat area, about as long as two school buses parked end-to-end. At each end, there are three wooden sticks called wickets. For a run to count, both batters must reach the other end of the pitch safely.
They have to get their bat or body behind a line called the 'crease'. If a player from the other team throws the ball and knocks over the wickets before the batter gets there, the batter is 'out' and doesn't score that run!
More Than Just Running!
Besides batters running, teams can also score 'extras'. These happen when the bowler (the person who throws the ball) makes a mistake, like throwing the ball illegally. If the ball goes to the boundary without being hit by the batter, that's also an extra run!
So, a team's total score is made up of all the runs the batters make by running, plus all the big hits, and all the extras. It's a mix of running, hitting, and a little bit of luck!
