Key Facts
Meet the Star House!
Imagine a special house on a hill in London, looking over a big river. This is the Royal Observatory, Greenwich! It's not just any house; it's a place where clever people looked at the sky to understand stars and planets. It was built a super long time ago, in 1676, by a king who wanted to know more about space. It's like a giant telescope and a history book all in one!
A King's Big Idea!
A long, long time ago, King Charles II had a brilliant idea. He wanted to build a place to study the stars really, really well. So, he chose a perfect spot on a hill in Greenwich Park.
No one had to buy new land because it was already a royal park! He even created a special job called the Astronomer Royal to be in charge. The first person to do this job was John Flamsteed, and the building was sometimes called Flamsteed House because he lived there.
Why It's Super Important!
This observatory is super important because it helped us figure out time! A special line called the Prime Meridian goes right through it. This line helped create Greenwich Mean Time, which is like the world's clock. It also helped sailors figure out where they were on the sea, which was very tricky before. It's like having a secret map for ships!
Looking Up and Around!
Even though the main star-watching moved away, the Royal Observatory is still a special place. You can visit it and stand on the Prime Meridian line! Imagine having one foot in the Eastern Hemisphere and one foot in the Western Hemisphere. They also have cool telescopes, and one is even used for science today. It’s a place where history and science meet for everyone to enjoy.
