Royal Canal - Lock Up The Year - Trail Marathon, 1/2 Marathon, 10KM - December 31st 2013

Key Facts
A Watery Highway!
The Royal Canal is like a giant, watery road that stretches across Ireland, from a big city called Dublin all the way to a town called Longford. It's one of two big water paths that connect Dublin to a huge river called the Shannon. Think of it like a special lane for boats to zoom along, carrying people and things from one place to another.
It was built a long, long time ago to help people travel and trade!
Boats, Boats Everywhere!
This canal was built for boats to travel on. Back then, boats were a very important way to move heavy things like food and supplies, and also to give people rides. The Royal Canal was made to be a busy highway for these boats. It was built right next to another canal, the Grand Canal, because they were like rivals trying to be the best water route for everyone in Ireland!
A Sleepy Canal Wakes Up!
For a while, the Royal Canal got a bit forgotten and fell into disrepair, meaning it wasn't used much and got a bit messy. But guess what? People realized how special it was and decided to fix it up! Much of the canal has been cleaned and repaired so that boats can travel on it again. It's like giving an old toy a new lease on life so everyone can play with it again!
Connecting Ireland by Water
The main part of the Royal Canal, the bit that goes all the way to the big River Shannon, was opened up again for boats on October 1, 2010. That's like a special birthday party for the canal! While a small part of it that goes to Longford Town isn't open yet, most of this amazing water road is ready for adventures. It shows how important these old waterways are for connecting places.
