Key Facts
Where the Planes Meet the Capital!
Imagine a super busy place where giant metal birds land and take off all day long! That's Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, or DCA for short. It's like the front door for many people visiting Washington, D.C., the city where important decisions are made.
This airport is so close to the capital, it's like being in your neighbor's backyard! It's in a place called Arlington, Virginia, right across the river from the big city.
A Speedy History Lesson!
This airport wasn't always called Reagan National. It started as Washington National Airport way back in 1941, when your grandparents might not have even been born! Some of the old parts are still there, like a special room called Terminal 1.
But now there's a much bigger, newer part called Terminal 2. In 1998, they decided to give it a new name to honor a very important president, Ronald Reagan, who was in charge of the country for eight years.
Super Busy Skies!
Did you know this airport is one of the busiest in the whole country? It's like having a huge playground with way more kids than usual! Millions of people fly through here every year, and the main runway is the busiest one in all of America.
That means planes are always coming and going, like a never-ending parade of airplanes. It's a hub for a big airline called American Airlines, meaning lots of their planes start and end their trips here.
Flying to Cool Places!
Even though it's super busy, this airport has a special rule. It can't fly to just anywhere in the world because it doesn't have special rooms for checking passports and customs from other countries. So, most of the flights go to places like Canada and some islands in the Caribbean where they have special agreements. It's also home to a special Coast Guard station, keeping watch from the sky!
