Imagine a leader who was once a soldier! Roh Tae-woo was a general in the South Korean army before he became the country's president. He was born a long, long time ago, in 1932.
He went to a special school for soldiers with his best friend, Chun Doo-hwan. Together, they had important jobs in the army and government. Roh Tae-woo became president in 1988, a year after the Seoul Olympics, and served for five years.
From Soldier to Leader
Roh Tae-woo didn't start as president. He was a brave soldier who even fought in a war in Vietnam! He was very good at his job and became a major general. Later, he helped his friend Chun Doo-hwan become president. This was a time when South Korea was changing a lot. Roh Tae-woo then decided to run for president himself, and people voted for him directly, which was a big change!

When Roh Tae-woo became president, he made South Korea a more democratic country. This means more people got to have a say in how the country was run. He helped make new rules so people could vote for their president directly.
He also made friends with countries that were far away, like the Soviet Union and China. It was like making new friends on the playground! South Korea also hosted the amazing 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.

Roh Tae-woo's time as president was important because he helped South Korea become more like the democracies we know today. He worked to make sure people had more freedom. Even though he had a big job, he also faced challenges and was later found guilty of some things he did before becoming president. He passed away in 2021, but his time as president helped shape South Korea's future.
