Key Facts
A Super-Sized City Playground!
Rock Creek Park is like a giant green ribbon running right through Washington, D.C. It's HUGE! It's so big, it's like having 350 football fields all put together!
This park is home to Rock Creek, a little river that flows into a bigger river called the Potomac. It's a special place where nature gets to stretch out, even though lots of people live nearby. It’s a place for animals to live and for people to play and explore.
When the Park Was Born!
A very long time ago, in 1890, people decided this special piece of land needed to be protected. They made a special rule, like a promise, to keep it a park forever. Before it was a park, it was just land.
But smart people knew it was important to save this natural spot. Now, it’s a place that’s been around for more than 100 years, which is older than your grandparents and maybe even your great-grandparents!
Fun and Games for Everyone!
More than two million people visit Rock Creek Park every single year! That's like almost everyone in a big city coming to visit! People come to play golf, ride bikes on twisty trails, and even ride horses.
There are places to have picnics, playgrounds for kids to climb and swing, and even a nature center where you can learn about the plants and animals. It’s a place for fun, exercise, and enjoying the outdoors.
Who Takes Care of This Big Park?
The park is looked after by a special group called the National Park Service. They are like the park's guardians! They make sure everything stays nice and safe for visitors and for the animals.
This group also takes care of other cool places in Washington, D.C., like old forts that were built a long, long time ago to protect the city. So, Rock Creek Park is part of a bigger team that protects important places.
