Meet General Lee!

Imagine a super-smart leader named Robert E. Lee. He was a general in a big fight called the American Civil War. He was in charge of a very important army called the Army of Northern Virginia. People thought he was very good at planning battles, like a chess master! He was a top student at a special school for soldiers and was an excellent officer for many years before the war.

A Soldier's Life

Robert E. Lee was born a long, long time ago, in 1807. He grew up in Virginia. His dad was also a soldier! Lee was a great student and joined the U.S. Army. He worked as a soldier and an engineer, building things like forts. He even helped design things for the army. He was a very skilled officer and served in different places across the country.

Leading the Way

When the Civil War started, Lee had a tough choice. He loved his country, but he also loved his home state of Virginia. Virginia decided to leave the United States, and Lee decided to go with Virginia. He became the main general for the Southern army. He fought many battles, sometimes against armies that were much bigger than his own!

After the Fighting

When the war ended, Lee didn't stop working. He became the president of a college called Washington College. He helped people in the North and South become friends again. He believed that slavery should end. Even though he was a famous general, he spent his later years helping students learn and grow.
