Roanoke Colony
Key Facts
Who Were the Roanoke Explorers?
Long, long ago, brave English explorers wanted to build a new home in America. Sir Walter Raleigh sent two groups of people to a place called Roanoke Island. The first group tried in 1585, but it was tough, and they went back home. The second group, in 1587, was even more special because it included families and even a baby girl named Virginia Dare, the first English baby born in America!
The Great Vanishing Act!
The second group of explorers, led by John White, wanted to build a town called the 'Cittie of Raleigh'. But when John White sailed back to England for more supplies, a big war stopped him from returning for three whole years! When he finally got back in 1590, the houses were still there, but all the people were gone! It was like they disappeared into thin air.
A Mysterious Message
The only clue the explorers left behind was a word carved into a wooden post: 'CROATOAN'. This was the name of a nearby island and a Native American tribe. Did the colonists move there to live with them? Or did something else happen? Nobody knows for sure, and that's why it's called the 'Lost Colony'. It's one of history's biggest puzzles!
Why We Still Talk About Them
Even though we don't know what happened to the Roanoke colonists, their story is super important. It shows how brave people were to explore new lands. And the mystery of the 'Lost Colony' makes us all wonder and imagine what could have happened. It's a story that has been told for hundreds of years!
