Where the Big Rivers Meet!

The Río de la Plata is a super special place in South America where two big rivers, the Uruguay River and the Paraná River, hug each other goodbye before flowing into the giant Atlantic Ocean! It's like a giant watery hug that makes a huge, wide mouth. This special spot is part of the border between two countries, Argentina and Uruguay.

It's a very important place for boats and for the animals that live there.

A River as Wide as a City!

Get ready for a WOW fact! The Río de la Plata is so wide at its end that it can be up to 220 kilometers (that's about 140 miles!) across. Imagine a super-duper long road – this river is wider than many cities! It’s so wide that sometimes it’s hard to tell if you’re looking at a river or the sea. It’s also about 290 kilometers (180 miles) long, which is longer than a long car trip!

A River of Silver Dreams!

Long, long ago, explorers thought they found lots of silver here, so they named it 'Río de la Plata,' which means 'River of Silver' in Spanish. Even though there wasn't a mountain of silver, the name stuck! People have lived along its shores for a very, very long time.

The cities on its banks are some of the busiest places in the countries of Argentina and Uruguay. It's a place full of stories and history.

Home to Busy Cities!

The land all around the Río de la Plata is super crowded with people! Two of the biggest and most famous cities in South America are right on its edge: Buenos Aires in Argentina and Montevideo in Uruguay. Millions of people live here!

They use the river for traveling, for fishing, and for fun. The people who live here have special ways of talking and even invented the exciting dance called the tango!
