Key Facts
Meet the Beautiful Green Goddess!
The RMS Caronia was a super-duper big ship that sailed the ocean a long, long time ago. It was so large, it was like a floating hotel for people traveling across the sea. People loved it because it was painted a lovely light green color, which made it look like a beautiful goddess of the sea.
That's why everyone called her the "Green Goddess"! She was built to be special, ready for both long trips across the ocean and fun holiday cruises.
When the Green Goddess Was Born!
This magnificent ship, the RMS Caronia, was launched way back on October 30, 1947. Think of it like a birthday for a giant! She belonged to a famous company called Cunard Line, which owned many big ships.
For many years, from 1947 until 1967, she was a star of the sea, carrying happy travelers. She was one of the first ships designed to do two important jobs: taking people across the ocean and also going on exciting vacation trips.
A Ship That Did Two Jobs!
The Caronia was a very clever ship because it could do two different things really well. It was built for crossing the big Atlantic Ocean, which is a very long journey. But it was also perfect for going on relaxing cruises, where people would visit different fun places.
This made her a "dual-purpose" ship, which was a new and exciting idea back then. She was like a superhero ship with two amazing powers!
The Green Goddess's Final Voyage
After many years of sailing, the Green Goddess stopped being a passenger ship in 1967. She was later renamed and tried to be a different ship, but it didn't last long. Sadly, in 1974, she was sold to be taken apart.
While being towed to a place to be scrapped, a big storm hit! The tow ropes broke, and the ship crashed into rocks near an island called Guam. She broke into three pieces, ending her amazing journey.
