Where Does This Rabbit Live?

The riverine rabbit is a very special animal that lives in a place called the Karoo, in South Africa. It likes to hide among thick bushes and plants that grow near rivers that sometimes dry up. This rabbit is the only one of its kind in the whole world! It’s a bit like a secret treasure hidden in the bushes, and you have to look carefully to find it.

What Does It Look Like?

This rabbit is about as long as a big ruler you might use at school. It has soft, dark brown fur. What’s really cool is that it has a dark stripe going from its mouth all the way to its ears, like a little mask! It also has a white ring around each eye, making it look like it’s wearing tiny glasses. It’s a very unique-looking bunny!

A Home Dug by Paws!

Unlike most rabbits that find ready-made homes, the riverine rabbit is a super builder! It digs its own burrows, which are like underground tunnels, in the soft dirt near the rivers. These burrows keep it safe from the hot sun and give baby rabbits a cozy place to grow. It’s the only rabbit in Africa that digs its own special home!

Why It Needs Our Help!

Sadly, there aren't many riverine rabbits left. They are very shy and have only one or two babies each year, which is not a lot. Also, the places where they live are changing because people are building farms. This makes it hard for them to find food and safe places to hide. We need to help protect their homes so they can hop around for a long, long time!
