Rishi Sunak's formative years were marked by a strong emphasis on education and a clear trajectory towards leadership. Born on May 12, 1980, in Southampton, his parents, who emigrated from East Africa with Indian heritage, instilled a drive for academic and professional excellence. He attended Winchester College, a prestigious independent school, before pursuing Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Lincoln College, Oxford.

His academic prowess was further recognized with a Fulbright Scholarship, enabling him to earn a Master of Business Administration from Stanford University. This period in the United States was pivotal, exposing him to global economic trends and a different approach to business. Upon returning to the UK, Sunak embarked on a successful career in finance, working for the globally recognized investment bank Goldman Sachs and later as a partner in two hedge fund firms.

This experience provided him with a deep understanding of financial markets, economic policy, and the intricacies of wealth management, skills that would later prove invaluable in his political career.

Sunak's entry into politics began with his election as the Member of Parliament for Richmond (Yorks) in 2015. Initially a 'backbencher,' he was not in a government position but contributed to parliamentary debates and committees. He became a notable supporter of the Brexit campaign in the 2016 referendum, aligning himself with a significant political movement.

His dedication and policy insights led to his promotion to junior ministerial roles. In 2018, he was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Local Government under Theresa May. His influence grew when Boris Johnson appointed him to the Cabinet as Chief Secretary to the Treasury in 2019, a role that involves significant responsibility for public spending and fiscal policy.

In February 2020, Rishi Sunak was elevated to the crucial position of Chancellor of the Exchequer. This role placed him at the forefront of the government's response to the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. He was instrumental in designing and implementing economic support measures, such as the furlough scheme to protect jobs and the 'Eat Out to Help Out' initiative to stimulate the hospitality sector.

His handling of these crises initially garnered significant public approval. However, the subsequent cost-of-living crisis in 2022 put his popularity under pressure. Amidst a period of political turmoil, Sunak resigned as Chancellor in July 2022.

He later successfully ran for the leadership of the Conservative Party, becoming Prime Minister in October 2022 at the age of 42. This made him the youngest Prime Minister since the Earl of Liverpool in 1812. His premiership was characterized by efforts to stabilize the economy, reduce inflation, and address key national priorities, including healthcare waiting lists and immigration.

Following the Conservative Party's significant defeat in the July 2024 general election, Rishi Sunak transitioned to the role of Leader of the Opposition. This position is vital in a parliamentary democracy, providing a platform for the main opposition party to scrutinize the government and present an alternative vision. He led the party for nearly four months, forming a shadow cabinet to prepare for future electoral contests.

His tenure as Leader of the Opposition concluded with the election of a new Conservative leader. Beyond his parliamentary duties, Sunak announced his intention to remain as a backbench MP. Furthermore, he signaled a return to his financial roots by taking a position as a senior advisor at Goldman Sachs, albeit with certain limitations on lobbying activities, indicating a continued engagement with the economic and financial spheres.
