A Royal Riverside Home!

Richmond Palace was a super special house for England's kings and queens a long, long time ago. It sat right next to the big River Thames, which is like a giant watery highway! This palace was built around the year 1501 by a king named Henry VII.

He was also known as the Earl of Richmond, which is how the palace and the nearby town got their names. It was a beautiful place to live, away from the busy city.

Who Lived in the Castle?

Lots of important people lived here! Queen Elizabeth I, who was a very famous queen, loved Richmond Palace so much that she even took her last breath there in 1603. Kings and queens continued to call it home until 1649. Imagine all the royal parties and important meetings that happened inside its walls! It was a place full of history and royal secrets.

What Happened to the Palace?

Sadly, after the last king who lived there died, the palace was sold off and taken apart. People used the stones and wood to build other things! It's like taking apart a giant LEGO castle to build new toys. Today, not much of the palace is left, but you can still see an old gatehouse, which is like a fancy entrance. It’s a little reminder of the grand palace that once stood there.

Finding the Palace Today!

Even though the palace is mostly gone, you can still find clues! The area where it used to be is between a green park called Richmond Green and the River Thames. Some street names nearby, like Old Palace Lane, are like secret messages telling us, 'A palace used to be here!' It’s like a treasure hunt for history lovers!
