He spent most of his time away from England, going on exciting adventures and fighting in faraway lands. He was a brave warrior, and people called him 'Lionheart' because he was as courageous as a lion!

Off to Fight in the Holy Land!

Richard's biggest adventure was called the Third Crusade. This was a huge mission to try and take back a special city called Jerusalem. Richard led his knights across the sea, fighting many battles.

He was a super strong fighter and a clever leader. Even though he didn't win back Jerusalem, he was so good at fighting that his enemies respected him a lot. He was like a star player on a very important team!

A King's Treasure Hunt!

After his crusades, Richard was captured by enemies on his way home! They wanted a lot of money to let him go. It was like a giant ransom! His family and friends had to collect a HUGE amount of gold and silver to pay for his freedom. This was more money than many people earned in their whole lives. It shows how important he was, but also how much trouble he got into!

Why We Remember the Lionheart
