Where is Spain?

Spain is a country in Europe, like a big boot kicking Italy! It has sunny beaches and tall mountains. The Restoration was a special time in Spain's story, like a chapter in a history book. It happened a long, long time ago, from 1874 to 1931. That's longer than your grandparents have been alive! It was a period when Spain tried to find a way to be peaceful and stable after lots of ups and downs.

When Kings Came Back!

Before the Restoration, Spain had a republic, which is like a country run by elected leaders, not a king. But then, a general helped bring back the king, King Alfonso XII. It was like a big change in how the country was run.

This new time was called the Bourbon Restoration because the king was from the Bourbon family. They wanted to make sure Spain was more settled after many years of trouble and even fighting.

Playing Fair? Not Always!

To keep things stable, the leaders invented a game called 'turno'. It meant the two main groups of politicians, one liberal and one conservative, would take turns being in charge. But sometimes, the elections weren't totally fair, which made some people unhappy. People like those who wanted Spain to be a republic, or those who wanted their own regions to have more power, didn't like this system.

A King and a General

Later in this period, King Alfonso XIII was the king. But things got tricky again, and a general named Miguel Primo de Rivera took over, almost like a temporary boss for the whole country. This happened because Spain had some problems, like after a big war in other countries and some defeats in places like Morocco. Eventually, the king left, and this whole Restoration time came to an end in 1931.
