Key Facts
A Very Special Retirement Party!
Usually, when someone is the Pope, they stay the Pope until they are very, very old or pass away. But Pope Benedict XVI decided he wanted to retire! He announced it on February 11, 2013.
It was like a super-duper special retirement party, but instead of cake, it was a big announcement! He was 85 years old, which is quite old, and he said his body wasn't strong enough anymore to do all the important Pope jobs.
Who's the New Boss?
When Pope Benedict XVI stepped down, everyone wondered who would be the next Pope. A special meeting called a 'conclave' happened. It's like a secret club meeting where important church leaders choose the new Pope.
This meeting started on March 12, 2013. The very next day, they picked a new Pope! His name was Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, and he took the name Pope Francis.
He's the Pope we have today!
A Pope Who Made History!
Pope Benedict XVI was the first Pope to retire in a super long time! The last time a Pope retired was way back in 1415, which is more than 600 years ago! That's older than your grandparents' grandparents' grandparents!
He also chose to be called 'Pope emeritus' after he retired. That means he was still a very important person, just not the main leader anymore. He lived as Pope emeritus until he passed away in 2022.
Why It Was a Big Deal!
When a Pope retires, it's a really big deal because it doesn't happen often. It showed that even the most important leaders can decide to take a break when they need to. Pope Benedict XVI's decision made him a part of history, like a famous explorer or a brave knight.
It was a moment that made everyone think about how leaders can change and how important it is to listen to your body when it needs rest.
