Key Facts
Who's That Bird with the Red Shoulders?
Imagine a bird that's mostly black but has super cool patches of bright red and yellow on its shoulders! That's the red-winged blackbird. The boys are all black with these flashy red and yellow epaulets, like little shoulder decorations.
The girls look very different, though! They are streaky brown, like a sparrow, which helps them hide. They love to hang out in wet, grassy places like marshes and fields near water.
A Bird's Busy Day: What's for Dinner?
Red-winged blackbirds are super busy eaters. They are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and bugs! In the summer, they love to gobble up juicy insects like caterpillars, beetles, and flies. They're like tiny flying bug catchers! In the fall and winter, they switch to seeds and grains, like corn and wheat. They use their pointy beaks to pick up seeds from the ground or from plants.
Singing Loud and Proud!
These birds are known for their loud, clear songs. The males sing to tell other boy birds, 'This is my spot!' and to attract girl birds. Their song sounds like 'conk-la-ree!' They are very brave and will even chase away bigger birds that get too close to their nests. They build their nests low down in the reeds or grasses, hidden away so their babies are safe.
Tiny Birds, Big Families!
A mama red-winged blackbird usually lays about 3 or 4 eggs at a time. The eggs are a pretty bluish-white color with dark spots. Both the mom and dad help feed the baby birds, bringing them lots of yummy insects. The babies grow up fast and soon learn to fly and find their own food. It's amazing how much work these little birds do to raise their families!
